Front Door Refurbishment & Renovation Leytonstone London

A traditional front door refurbishment & renovation project carried out in Leytonstone, East London by our team at J. A. Pell & Son.

The front door had several major structural and cosmetic issues that we needed to address as part of the restoration. At some point in its life, someone re-glazed the door. Subsequently in doing so, they damaged the top rail and centre mullion. As a result, the centre of the door developed significant deflection and movement.

Our team removed the front door and placed it on our bench to begin the refurbishment and renovation. Additionally to resolving the issue with the top rail and centre mullion, our team carried out several other structural repairs, effectively restoring the front door and giving it a new lease on life.

After completing all the major repairs, our team cut out any cosmetically damaged areas, cracks, and other defects to prepare the door for the redecoration process. The cosmetic repairs consisted of a two part repair filler, finishing up with a course sanding to remove any old materials. Leaving us with a prepped surface ready for us to apply a Dulux Trade Primer & Undercoat system.

A Traditional Front Door Refurbishment & Renovation

Our team finished the front door and frame with a Dulux Trade paint system, both inside and out. Inside, they finished with Dulux Trade Satinwood in Bleached Lichen 4. Outside, they used Dulux Trade Weathershield Exterior High Gloss in Brilliant White and Buckingham Green. Both solvent based products for a superior and durable finish. You would have seen Buckingham Green quite a lot throughout London, it’s a very traditional colour combination and finish.

The front door was refitted in a traditional manor complete with all new Brass door furniture & hardware. This included: A pair and half of 4″ Grade 13 Ball Bearing Hinges, ERA ‘British Standard’ High Security Night Latch, ERA ‘British Standard’ 5 Lever Fortress Deadlock, ERA Door Chain, traditional size Victorian Letter Plate/Letterbox and a period style door knocker. Our team managed to restore and renovate the original brass step/threshold plate, leaving some character for good measure.

Evidently this front door underwent an extensive refurbishment and renovation. All things considered the end result produced a stunning restored example of a traditional London front door.
